The Blue Man (Joseph Corvelzchik)-
The Blue Man is the first person Eddie meets in Heaven. He's patient, forgiving, and his skin is blue from the ingestion of Silver Nitrate. He reveals to Eddie how he, as a young boy, had unintentionally killed The Blue Man.

The Captain-
The Captain is the second person Eddie meets in heaven. He's tough, rugged, and loyal to all the men in his platoon. He takes Eddie back to his younger years when he was in the service. Eddie previously thought the Captain to have died in an accident but it is later revealed that the Captain dies saving Eddie's life.

Ruby is the fourth person Eddie meets in heaven. She's an older lady with an aristocratic flair to her. She came long before his time but she is the person of whom the pier is named. Ruby takes Eddie back to the root of his problems with his father. She teaches Eddie how not everything is what it seems and the art of forgiveness.

Eddie's Father-
A harsh man with little expectations for his two boys. Eddie's relationship with his father is one of the major conflicts Eddie has in the story. Eddie's father is an alcoholic and a compulsive gambler who stops speaking to Eddie once he defends himself against his father. Once he dies, Eddie must learn to move on and forgive his father.

Marguerite is Eddie's late wife and the great love of his life. She is the fourth person Eddie meets in heaven. Having died so young she remains young in heaven and Eddie hardly recognizes her. It is revealed that she had died in a series of events preceded by Eddie's own misjudgement.

Tala is the fifth and final person Eddie meets in heaven. She is a five or six-year-old Filipina with a small nose and cinnamon complexion. The burning shadow that has haunted Eddie ever since the war turned out to be Tala. Eddie's platoon had unintentionally killed Tala in the fire that they started. Tala redeems Eddie and informs him that he did save little Amy's life.

The second most important woman in Eddie's life
only to Marguerite. She's loving, tender, and protective of her sons. Eddie never understands why his mother puts up with her husband. When Eddie's father is hospitalized she even stays by his bedside until he dies.

Eddie's Brother (Joe)-
Joe is the only and eldest brother to Eddie. Rather than short and stocky like Eddie, this brother was tall and lank and good in school. Instead of joining the Army like Eddie, he goes on to build his family in Florida.

Amy-
Amy is a small girl about the same age as Tala. She visits the pier often and walks around by herself because her mother is with her boyfriend. She always greets Eddie and asks him to make balloon animals out of pipe-cleaners for her. If not for Eddie pushing her out of the way and sacrificing his own life then she would have died in the accident.

Mickey is a fat Irish drunk who works with and is best friends with Eddie's father. After Mickey tries to rape Eddie's mother out of desperation, Eddie's father almost kills him but somehow ends up saving him from drowning. Eddie's father develops the pneumonia that kills him as a result of this.

Dominguez is Eddie's young Mexican co-worker. He's thin, has a wife named Theresa, and a new baby coming. Dominguez is the last almost-friend Eddie has on Earth before he dies.
